BREAKING THE RULES :: Portrait Workshop

February 27th :: SOLD-OUT
March 20th :: SOLD-OUT

Sunday, October 25th.  Get up early, grab your coffee and shake the weekend off. I will be speaking with the Green Bay Digital Photography Group at Arketype Inc at 612 Stuart Street in Green Bay for a day-long seminar, discussing the main reason why I remain motivated, inspired and passionate about my career in photography; Shooting For Myself.
This will be my first time speaking with the Green Bay group and it’ll be more fun than going to the dentist. We will spend the day digging into the dynamics of photography from my perspective, talking about the nitty gritty essentials to developing your personal style, getting you to re-think the way you shoot, client/subject interaction, utlizing available light in any situation, artificial lighting techniques, hands-on shooting with models and a photo critique. I will focus more on developing personal shooting skills, while stripping the veneer off the confusing technical mumble jumble of picture making. The seminar will be geared towards both beginning hobbyists and working professionals. The whole day will be very laid back, with more than enough time for open discussion and Q&A.

I struggled for years to begin finding my voice as a photographer. And to this day, I’m still refining my work with every shoot I take on. Days upon days were spent searching for a way to revitalize the way I looked at shooting portraits. During this time I reached countless dead-ends, was met with endless frustration and nearly walked away from the camera on many occasions. I email other photographers looking for magic bullets, tried all the gimmicks, played with Photoshop actions and even tried emulating other photographers work. Nothing stuck to the wall like my daughter’s pancakes at 6:40am. It wasn’t until I began to break the rules of traditional portraiture from the mass culmination of past mistakes, that I began to solidify my own shooting style.

These are my official “pilot-episodes” of localized workshops, speaking with photographers who are still struggling to begin finding their unique voice. I’m not revolutionizing the industry here or breaking new ground, but I’m helping to lay the groundwork to re-evaluate the way we look at shooting portraits and begin the process of creative thinking. I said it many times before; I love educating fellow photographers. It’s a way to give back. Just the same way others helped me find my own voice.
