It’s late and I’ve spent roughly 10 hours at home since returning home from my family vacation in Mexico. No time for rest here. After traveling across the country and with 6 hours of sleep in between, we rolled into the third installment of the “Breaking The Rules” Portrait Workshop here at the studio. What an incredible day we had. We had 10 great photographers participate in today’s workshop, which went past the 16 hour mark (in what felt like 5 hours.) I guess time flies when your having a freakin’ blast! We covered alot of ground and I was completely impressed with the level of talent in the participants.

Our second installation of the “Breaking The Rules” Portrait workshop was another huge success. We had an incredible group again and I learned a lot from the attendees, including many new tidbits about Lightroom. We had quite a few local participants and two that came in from out of state. Much of the day was spent talking about client-photographer interaction, utilizing any available light, shooting in less than favorable locations and breaking out of our comfort zone to make more compelling portraits. In the afternoon, we had a chance to touch on off-camera lighting techniques as well. We shared a ton with each other, learned some new things along the way and truly didn’t take ourselves too seriously.

“BREAKING THE RULES” WORKSHOP ROUND 1

Here are some shots from this past weekend’s portrait workshop I threw here at my studio. The day went past the 16-hour mark, but we got so much accomplished and met some great folks. Some of whom traveled from Milwaukee, Madison and even Ohio! The workshop was not a wedding photography, business management or theory-based lecture by any means. The day was geared towards the basics of shooting portraits and spoke to the ground level mechanics of photography, composition, exposure and the principles of why we shoot the way we do. We dug into the basics of making more dynamic portraits and getting to a comfortable space with our photographer-subject interaction.

I have spoken to groups on numerous occasions prior to this event, but this was the first time running a seminar on my own. It went amazingly well and confirmed my love for sharing and learning within the photographic community. This wasn’t about re-inventing the photography wheel or delivering magic bullets to make us amazing photographers, but more about helping move past frustrations within our own work. Heck, I even learned a bunch from the attendees!
